Purpose
The System Interface Definition Viewpoint captures system wide concepts defining interfaces. It allows to adopt long-lived standards and to harmonize conceptual interface definitions to improve interchangeability, interoperability, and portability.
Applicability
The System Interface Definition Viewpoint supports the “prepare for system requirement definition” activity part of the “System Requirements Definition Process” activities of the INCOSE SYSTEMS ENGINEERING HANDBOOK 2023 [§2.3.5.3] and contributes to the artifact “System Requirements Definition Report”.
Furthermore, the viewpoint supports the “Interface Management” approach of the INCOSE SYSTEMS ENGINEERING HANDBOOK 2023 [§3.2.4].

Concern
- Which are the interface definitions for the conceptual architecture?
- Which conceptual items (energy, material, information, etc.) are exchanged within the system?
- Which kind of conceptual items (energy, material, information, etc.) are exchanged between the system and external entities?
Exposed Concepts
The Diagram shows the concepts exposed by the viewpoint, and related concepts if necessary.
The Table shows the concepts exposed by the viewpoint, and related concepts if necessary.
| Concept | Documentation |
|---|---|
| defining | Specifies the fact that a Conceptual Interaction Point Definition defines the exchange capabilities of a Conceptual Interaction Point. |
| Conceptual Interaction Point | Specifies the existence of an interaction point on Conceptual Level. |
| Conceptual Interaction Point Definition | Specifies the exchange capabilities of an interaction point on Conceptual Level. |
| Conceptual Interaction Point Property | Specifies a detail of an interaction point on Logical Level. |
| Conceptual Exchange Type | Specification for any type of conceptual item (energy, material, information, etc.) to be exchanged on Conceptual (Functional Architecture and Logical Architecture) Level. The Conceptual Exchange Type is agnostic to any realization on Physical Level. |
| typing | Specifies the fact that a Conceptual Exchange Type defines the type of a Conceptual Interaction Point Property. |
| specifyingDetailOf | Specifies the fact that a Conceptual Interaction Point Property is a detail of a Conceptual Interaction Point Definition. |
Realization of exposed Concepts
