Physical | Taxonomy & Structure |
Purpose
The Physical Exchange Type Viewpoint captures type definitions on design level for any exchanged or stored items, e.g., information, material, or energy, of the Physical Domain. Its purpose is to define these item types, their properties and their relationships. It also shows the traceability of these items to the conceptual layer (Functional and Logical Domain)
Applicability
The Physical Exchange Type Viewpoint supports the “Design Definition Process” activities of the INCOSE SYSTEMS ENGINEERING HANDBOOK 2023 [§2.3.5.5] and contributes to the artifacts “System Design Description” and “System Interface Definition”. It also supports the “Interface Management” method of the INCOSE SYSTEMS ENGINEERING HANDBOOK 2023 [§3.2.4].

Presentation
A block definition diagram (BDD) featuring Physical Exchange Types, their properties and relationships.
A tabular format listing the Physical Exchange Types, their properties and relationships.
Stakeholder
Concern
- From which conceptual item (energy, material, information) is a physical item derived?
- Which kind of physical items (energy, material, information, etc.) are used in the physical architecture of the system?
Exposed Concepts
The Diagram shows the concepts exposed by the viewpoint, and related concepts if necessary.
The Table shows the concepts exposed by the viewpoint, and related concepts if necessary.
Concept | Documentation |
---|---|
Physical Exchange Kind | Specification for any kind of physical item (energy, material, information, etc.) to be exchanged on Physical Level. This is the realization of the specification made by System Domain Kinds. |
typing | Specifies the fact that a Physical Exchange Kind defines the type of a Physical Item Exchange. |
typing | Specifies the fact that a Physical Exchange Kind defines the type of a Physical Interaction Point Property. |
realizing | Specifies the fact that a System Domain Kind is realized by Physical Exchange Kinds. |
